A Study in Fast Changing SEO

    Screen_shot_2011-02-25_at_10

To be clear this post is not a commentary on the case.  It's only a study in extreme SEO movements in a short period of time.
In this case, a woman has sued someone who is generally loved and respected in the industry. A front page Inman news article and a post by Jay Thompson which already ranks number as the number one item outside of domains controlled by the company is a great example in how SEO can ruin your brand. Just hours after Jay posted, it's already affecting the rankings of the Lones Group site and their current domains are actually in flux. With a few more inbound links towards Jay's post it's likely he will outrank the main company site which is high on flash (not good for SEO) and low on content. It will be interesting to study this site over the next few days to see the impact.
Update: The Phoenix Real Estate Guy Post is now ranking here:
It seems to me that this has been one of the more dramatic moves I've ever seen!  From noting to right under the domain with the words in the search term itself in just about 5 hours.

Update 2: So its now been a few days since the original SEO went into flux and things are shaking out.  With 248 additional comments on The Phoenix Real Estate Guy's site, it hasn't overtaken the Lones Group page, however it is the number one item under their domain.  But since then something interesting also happened.  All of the Lones Group social media sites, multiple blog pages etc, are now all off the main page.  The articles now appearing are in order:

    The Lones Group

The Phoneix Real Estate Guy post

    Jeff Bernheisel's post on Nobodyis.me

Tech Savvy Agent - Move.com/Realtor.com Employee Chris Smith's post

Jim Marks' and Drew Meyers' post on VirtualResults.net

    Nick Bastian's Post on RailLife.com

    The Lones Group Facebook profile

Another interesting item was tossed into the mix today.  Inman.com linked to each of these posts.  The interesting item to note is to see what now happens due to the anchor text each of these posts received.  Many of them were poor such as "his blog."  But a powerful site link Inman providing a follow link to a site should change these rankings around a bit.  Since some of the aboved received them such as the Phoenix Real Estate Guy posts and Jim and Drew's site.  The others did not.  Let's check in a few days again.

    dont-be-stupidThe Lones Group…

Oh wait. For the sue-happy out there, let’s start with some disclosures:

I am not an attorney, in any way, shape or form.  I consider Daniel Rothamel and his family (also parties to the lawsuit I’m about to discuss) personal friends. And until today, I had never heard of The Lones Group. I have no idea if they are good at what they do, nor do I really care – that’s not the point. Finally, what follows is simply my personal opinion, which I freely admit is biased and slanted due to my relationship with the Rothamel’s. You are also forewarned that this will be an interminably long post…

I have a feeling this will be a case study on how to ruin your brand for many, many years to come....

That this has taken off in such a short time shows the power of our/the social networking platform. As Eric said, we all should think before we jump. Good luck to Daniel and his Family.

I just spotted myself on page two. I credit Jay for always linking to me for that!

Yep the Lones Group has definitely done themselves more harm than good. I expect that the $75k they asked for is now looking like a pittance compared to the fall out for years to come to their reputation.
